Located on the southern edge of Lake Tahoe, the city of South Lake Tahoe offers easy access to all that this incredible alpine lake has to offer.
South Lake Tahoe is the lake's biggest tourist city. It runs for about five miles on the south side of the lake. The Heavenly ski resort (Tahoe's largest) is basically in the city and there are casinos in Stateline, right across the border in Nevada.
Whether looking for a quiet alpine getaway or activities such as golfing, boating and fishing, South Lake Tahoe provides it. The area was home to one of the first summering destinations for the wealthy during the 1800s.
Today the Tallac Historic Site shows the history of the city and its estates—the Pope, Baldwin and Valhalla estates—open their doors to educate visitors throughout the year.
In the winter, skiing and snowboarding on the nearby slopes, including Heavenly Ski Resort and Sierra-at-Tahoe, attract visitors from around the world. As well as offering access to the lake, South Lake Tahoe is close to the casinos on the Nevada side of the border. Lake Tahoe itself--the largest and deepest alpine lake in North America--is ringed by mountains and resorts. |
